As any hair color enthusiast knows, maintaining vibrant and fresh hues requires care and consideration, especially when it comes to washing routines. Hairstylist and wig artist Stella Cini recently shared her expert insights, highlighting five hair colors that particularly struggle with frequent washing. If you love washing your hair often, here’s why you might want to think twice before choosing these shades.
Rose gold is undeniably one of the most flattering versions of the copper hair trend, blending warm copper tones with soft pink hues. However, as Stella Cini points out, “this hair color tends to be one of the ones that fade the quickest because of how little actual rose pigments are in the hair.” The rosy tint that makes this color so appealing quickly disappears with each wash, leaving you stuck with a basic copper shade.
Ice-white hair is a stunning version of the white hair trend that gives you that ethereal glow. But without regular maintenance, this color can quickly lose its luster. “If not maintained very regularly with silver shampoos and subsequent toners, this hair color fades to yellow-white very quickly,” Stella broods. The bright, crisp white can turn brassy, ruining its pristine beauty.
Pastel blue is an enchanting hair color that stands out for its soft, pastel look. However, it’s also one of the quickest colors to fade. What is more, this color can turn into an undesired shade before it fully fades away! According to Stella, “It doesn’t just go white, it turns a bit of a seaweed blue before it reaches an ultimately white stage.”
Vibrant and eye-catching, bright red hair can make a bold statement. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hold up well to frequent washing. Stella warns that it “turns rusty brown if you wash your hair often,” as the vivid red pigments bleed out quickly. This leads to a dull and less vibrant appearance over time.
Rainbow hair or ombre hair with multiple vivid colors is playful and vibrant in equal measures, but it comes with its challenges. Stella notes, “The problem with mixing multiple vivid colors on your hair is that all of them fade at very different rates.” This uneven fading can result in a much duller overall look, as one or two shades fade faster than the others.
Maintaining vivid hair colors requires careful consideration of your washing routine. If you frequently wash your hair, you may want to reconsider these shades or adopt strategies to preserve their vibrancy.
