“Borderlands” is Gearbox Software’s iconic shooter video game released in 2009. Set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the story revolves around a group of misfits and the galaxy’s most wanted criminals who team up to find the entrance to the mysterious vault containing unspeakable treasures. Lilith, aka the Firehawk, is their fearless commander who follows her own agenda in the mission. As a Siren, she can summon the wings of fire and release a massive burst of energy that kills the enemies nearby.
The live-action adaptation by Lionsgate follows the original plotline and introduces major updates to our beloved video game characters. Cate Blanchett’s Lilith is no exception. As the movie trailer shows, both costume designers and makeup artists worked hard to recreate the Siren’s signature grungy style. A worn-out leather jacket and a pair of heavy guns are Lilith’s most recognizable accessories. And those fiery red-and-yellow tresses? A burning flame, indeed!

Redheads have all the fun, and we couldn’t agree more. Experimenting with the shades of red may change the whole personality and bring out the most flattering angles. So, instead of matching the original character’s cold red hair tone, the creative team opts for a bright red hairstyle – something between ravishing orangey red and neon red. This particular shade complements Cate Blanchett’s skin tone, making her light blue eyes pop.
A major departure from Lilith’s canonic red-to-pink ombre is the introduction of an underlayer hair color that spices up the whole look and adds vibrancy. Yellow strands peeking out from under her red locks imitate the dancing flame, setting her hair ablaze quite literally. This color-blocking technique introduces some depth and dimension to the base color that looks even more fiery than the original one. Some may even suggest that this red-to-yellow transition is a subtle reference to her fire wings. That would be a truly exciting transformation!
Fiery locks are not the only change in Cate Blanchett’s jaw-dropping makeover. She totally rocks her messy bob with side-swept bangs, adding some extra movement to the red hair and revealing all those gorgeous yellow layers underneath. The cut accentuates the actress’s high cheekbones and defined jawline, transforming her from a softie into a baddie. The elongated fringe and wispy ends make Cate Blanchett’s Lilith look charming and authoritative at the same time.
It’s no surprise that the actress appears to be much younger with a bright hair color and a modern cut. We all know that vibrant colors make you look younger because they enliven a faded color and refresh the whole look. Many silver-haired beauties even opt for bright temporary dyes while growing out gray locks. The trick works well since the bright pigment conceals salt-and-pepper strands long enough to come up with a permanent option.
Cate Blanchett is a star with a capital ‘S.’ Her endless talent and charisma are palpable even from the other side of the screen. We expect the same level of passion and devotion in the upcoming “Borderlands” adaptation. Something tells us her bold hairstyle is only a droplet of what awaits us in the movie.
