Half-up half-down strikes a perfect balance of detail, face-framing and loose hair. All these features make this hairstyle so lovable. From an easy braided boho look to more intricate multi-technique elastic band hairstyles, here are three viral half-up-half-down tutorials you’ll want to try immediately. Watch them all and prepare for your next good hair day.
“Obsessed with this hairstyle,” says Ayse Acun, a self-proclaimed hair lover and creator of this trending Instagram video. This half up half down hairstyle would require some of your time and patience, but you won’t regret it a minute because… just look how stunning it is.
To recreate this hairstyle, you will need a few strong hair bands, a fine teeth comb (ideally atail comb) and some hairspray.
First, make two ponytails on the top of your head. Bring these two ponytails together and join them with another hairband. Then pull the ends through the gap between the two ponytails to add some lift. Next, make two thin regular braids with bubble braid elements in the middle. A few metal hair rings will both add an accent and cover the rubber bands.
This hairstyle is an absolute gem – wear it for a night out, a birthday party, a brunch date or even a prom or wedding. As Eliza, the maker of this video describes it: “THE hairstyle to do if you’re having a bad hair day”.
Start with two Dutch braides on the crown of your head. Join them at the back using a hair tie. Add a ribbon and tie it in a bow. You will have a ponytail, which you can split into two parts and make two braids. Weave the loose ends of the ribbon into each braid for contrast and detail.
Probably the easiest to make out of all three, this hairstyle is seriously amazing. You must definitely try it, and this style will become your go-to look for any occasion. Suitable even for a very entry-level braider, this hairstyle doesn’t require particular skills, yet looks very sophisticated.
First, separate the crown and put it into a ponytail. Then make two basic braids on each side. Yes, they don’t have to be Dutch or French braids which is great news! Stop braiding at the point where the braid would reach the half-ponytail at the back. Then is our favorite moment: you make a gap in your braid, closer to the ends, and then pull the half-ponytail through this gap. Repeat it with the other side braid.
If you struggle to hide the bands or the hairstyle doesn’t feel secure enough, use a few bobby pins to help it.
The key to your braided hairstyle looking effortless and relaxed is gently pulling some strands to make it softer and more natural.
Now, when you have watched these hair tutorials, pick your favorite and go give it a try! Remember, it shouldn’t be perfect the first time you do it – what’s important is you are getting better and better, and improving your technique with every new style you go for!
