Meet the bob that knows how to manage its weight.
Want to cut several inches, but the thought of a chin-grazing bob makes your stomach drop? There is a middle ground. The slip bob holds onto the classic 90s shape, lets it fall a bit closer to the shoulders, and brings in enough movement to make the cut feel more relaxed.

If you ever tried on a silk slip dress, you know the luxe feeling of smoothness. Translated into a hairstyle, you get glossiness and a fluid shape that skims the shoulders. That is where the slip bob gets its name.
The cut typically falls at the shoulders or slightly higher, with gentle internal layers that take out a bit of weight but don’t disrupt the outer shape. A blunt bob gives you a stronger, more defined edge; a layered lob creates more separation throughout the length. The slip bob keeps the outline relatively simple, then uses hidden layers to control weight and movement underneath.

Fine hair may have the most obvious reason to try it. Internal layers help the cut move without shredding the ends. Keeping the perimeter fairly full also helps fine strands look substantial.
Thick hair is where internal layering earns its keep. Removing some weight underneath can prevent shoulder-length hair from forming a bulky triangle, especially around the back.
Straight hair gives you the classic slip bob effect with relatively little persuasion. A quick blow-dry and a round brush can bring out that smooth 90s silhouette.
Natural bends of wavy hair give the cut a more relaxed personality. Your stylist may leave more length and adjust the internal layers so the waves have room to form.
Curls can make the same haircut appear considerably shorter, so length and layering require more planning. A stylist familiar with curly cutting can account for shrinkage and place layers according to your curl pattern.

Forget the haircut charts that assign one bob to every face shape. The point is where you want the ends to land and how you want the front to frame your features.
A shoulder-skimming length can create a longer visual line, and front pieces can be adjusted to add softness or structure around the cheekbones and jaw. If you have a strong preference about either area, mention it before the cut begins.

The slip bob can look beautifully smooth with a quick blow-dry and a round brush, but it does not require a daily appointment with your hairdryer. Air-dry it and let your natural texture take over. Add loose waves with a curling iron for more movement.
Skip styling altogether, and the haircut will reveal its natural shape. That is part of its appeal. Just remember that shoulder-length hair can rub against clothing, so ends may benefit from regular trims every six to eight weeks.
