Robert Downey Jr., aka Tony Stark and every woman’s celeb crush, is enjoying his career renaissance lately. After his award-winning performance in “Oppenheimer,” the actor plays multiple characters in HBO’s new espionage thriller, “The Sympathizer.” And for every role, he is sporting different hairstyles and makeup, just like a real spy.
As the trailer shows, the story revolves around a Vietnamese double agent who travels to the United States to gather intel. Robert Downey Jr. plays four people – a CIA operative, a college professor, a politician, and a filmmaker – scheming behind the main character’s back. From bald head to red curls – the actor’s on-screen transformations never disappoint!
One of RDJ’s characters in the TV show is Claude – a freckled-faced CIA agent with curly ginger hair. The hair and makeup team designed a special wig with a receding hairline, matched by a pair of bleached eyebrows. The hair color is very untypical for the actor, known for his dark drown mane. The red curls make the Hollywood star look older, perfectly representing his mysterious character whose career has seen better days.
Perhaps, the most unexpected and radical hair transformation for the show is Robert Downey Jr.’s bald head with pencil-thin mustache à la Walter White from “Breaking Bad.” We all know that the film star takes acting seriously. But this time, he takes his hair game to the next level by trading his thick hair for a shaved head to portray eccentric Professor Hammer, who is obsessed with Orientalism. In his Instagram video, the actor shares the process on camera, showing how his sons help him get a new haircut. A true devotion to the role!
The next character change is RDJ’s transformation into Congressman Ned Godwin, sporting a neat and classy Ivy League haircut on sandy hair lined with silvery strands. This sleek side-swept style is as conservative as his political views. A true spirit of Republicanism and a Hollywood smile make this character appealing as much as off-putting.
Robert Downey Jr.’s role as an independent filmmaker, Niko, is a major throwback to his “Sherlock Holmes” era. Just like a charismatic detective, this character features a loose and mischievous look with mid-length waves casually swept away from the face. And those sideburns! A nod to men’s hairstyle trends of the ‘60s.
Robert Downey Jr. is a man of many faces (and hairstyles), and we can’t wait to see them all!
