As 2022 is ending, the world of hair is abuzz with changes, products, and celebrity scandals. From new shows to thousands of digital media headlines, it’s clear that hair trends are having a moment. That’s why we’ve decided to analyze the impact of these events on our search habits and uncover the hidden patterns in the world of hair.

We collected the most trending search terms related to hair. Then we analyzed the Google Trends data for every day for every search term for every state. Detailed methodology is described at the bottom of this article.

Key Findings:

  • Wolf Cut is the most popular haircut of 2022. It contributed to 27% of all top searches across the U.S. and it was the most trending search phrase in 29 states.
  • Billie Eilish is the #1 celebrity who generated the biggest search trends related to her hairstyle changes. The search term “Billie Eilish hair” was the biggest celebrity hair-related search trend in Delaware, Iowa, Oregon, South Dakota, and Utah and it contributed to 16% of all searches in this category.
  • Olaplex is the #1 brand that generated the biggest hair product-related search trends in 2022. Olaplex products contributed to 47% of all hair product-related searches.
  • Claw Clips, a Y2K trend, is the #1 hair-related product that dominated the search trends. The search term “Claw clips” contributed to 18% of all hair product-related searches in 2022.
  • Afro Hairstyle was a #1 trending style and search term in NY for 47 days.
  • The Beach Waves hairstyle has been the #1 trend in Hawaii for 269 days.
  • Tennessee was the biggest trendsetter state in 2022. Five trending hair-related searches appeared first in Tennessee and then spread to other states.
  • Hawaii is the most detached state in terms of hair trends. Hawaii’s top search trend didn’t match the common interest of the United States during 240 days in 2022.
  • Californians had the most diverse hair-related search interests in 2022 with 27 unique search terms.

For each state, we found the search term with the top 1 search interest during the longest period of time.

1. Wolf Cut

Wolf Cut is the most trending search term that took over 22 US states in 2022. 27% of all top searches across the US were “Wolf Cut” this year. This is the equivalent of 97 days in top charts across all the states.

The Wolf Cut is a trendy hairstyle that has gained popularity on social media platforms such as TikTok. It is a hybrid of the classic 80s mullet and the 70s shag cut and has been worn by celebrities such as Keke Palmer, Miley Cyrus, and Billie Eilish. The versatility and stylishness of the Wolf Cut may have contributed to its popularity. Additionally, the popularity of the Wolf Cut may have been influenced by the trend of combining different styles and eras to create unique and fashionable looks.

2. Broccoli Cut

Broccoli Cut loved by zoomers dominated Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington. Broccoli cut was the top trend for an equivalent of 15 days in 2022.

The Broccoli Cut, also known as the zoomer perm or bird’s nest cut, is a trendy hairstyle that has gained popularity on social media platforms such as TikTok. It is similar to indie-inspired looks from the 00s, featuring shaved or faded sides and a lot of volume and length on top. The Broccoli Cut has been adopted by TikTok influencers such as Sebastian Bails and Trey Lander, which may have contributed to its popularity. Additionally, the contrast between the short sides and the long top of the Broccoli Cut creates an eye-catching shape, and the style is relatively easy to maintain. These factors may have contributed to the popularity of the Broccoli Cut in 2022.

3. Tribal Braids

Tribal Braids were most prevalent in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.

The most common explanation is that Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina are among the states with the biggest Black population.

Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no denying that these celebrities left their mark on the world in a big way.

1. Billie Eilish

The U.S. was interested the most in Billie Eilish’s hair. The search term “Billie Eilish Hair” dominated the search for four days and it was the top 1 celebrity hair-related search term in five states.

Even though she did not release any new albums in 2022, Billie Eilish has done several big hair transformations this year that made her stand out and attracted the biggest interest.

2. Halle Berry

Her hair was the second most trending celebrity hair search in 2022. The search term “Hally Berry Hair” was the top 1 trending celebrity hair-relates search term in six states and it dominated the U.S. hair-related trends for one day in 2022.

3. Pamela Anderson

The search term “Pamela Anderson Hair” was the top 1 trending celebrity hair-relates search term in six states and it dominated the U.S. hair-related trends for half of the day in 2022. Pamela Anderson’s ‘Pammy Updo’ from the ’90s has become iconic in 2022 and contributed to her popularity.

Interesting Find:

In Alaska, Montana, Oklahoma, Vermont, and Wyoming celebrity hair-related searches did not have top interest on any single day in 2022.

3. Pretty Party

Pretty Party brand contributed to 14% of all searches in the category.

Interesting Find:

In Delaware, West Virginia, and Wyoming product-related searches did not have top interest on any single day in 2022.

  • Missouri was the first state in 2022 that started searching for Pamela Anderson Hair, Pretty Party, and COVID hair
  • Virginia is the first state that started searching for Dragon Blonde, Onion Juice For Hair, and Olaplex 5
  • Illinois, Kentucky, and Oklahoma were the only states in 2022 that did not contribute to any hair-related search trends.

  • The most conforming states are Alaska, Montana, and North Dakota which had different search trends only two, two, and four days in 2022 respectively.

Methodology

Trending hair-related search terms were collected from Google News, Exploding Topics, and Glimpse. Weekly interest and relative state-level interest were taken for each search term for the period from 1 January 2022 to 26 November 2022. The weekly data for each search term for each week was calculated by multiplying weekly U.S. data and relative state-level interest. Cubic spline interpolation was used to calculate the daily values for each state and each search term.

  • “# of days dominated” was calculated using the formula 365 x (n / 16830) where n is the number of times the search term had the biggest interest in any state and 16830 is the total number of states x days in the period of our analysis.
  • “# of states dominated in 2022” is the number of states where a given search term was top 1 search trend in a given category for the longest period compared to other search terms.
