Curly hair is beautifully unique, and type 3B curls stand out with their bouncy, defined ringlets. Whether you’re figuring out if 3B matches your curl pattern or looking for the perfect style, this guide has it all, straight from the mouths of curly specialists. Find expert tips, product recommendations, and haircut ideas that work with your curls.
Type 3B hair features curls that are about the size of your thumb, falling between loose curls and tight coils. According to West Palm Beach curly hairstylist Isabel Brito, “3B hair usually is a little tighter, with a lot of bounce and definition.” Another clue? Its spring factor – the way it coils back after being stretched – ranges from 30% to 50%. If your hair has noticeable volume and ringlets but doesn’t coil as tightly as 3C hair, chances are you’re in the 3B category.
Understanding the spectrum of curl types can be tricky. Sarah D’Angelo, a curly hair stylist, explains, “3B curls are smaller than 3A but bigger than 3C. They typically achieve more root volume than 3A curls but less than 3C.” Isabel Brito adds, “3A is known for being looser and more wavy, whereas 3C is a super tight and extremely defined curl.”
Think of 3B as the middle ground: tighter than soft 3A curls yet looser than the dense, coil-like 3C curls.
Given their versatility, 3B curls can suit almost any hairstyle. Hairstylist Travis Briggs shares, “3B texture hair is beautiful, and what makes it so wonderful is how versatile it is across different lengths and types of cuts.”
Here are five haircut suggestions for every length and vibe:
A cropped pixie looks chic and adorable. Layers can enhance volume, but you can also skip them for a sleeker look.
A bob that ends at your chin or shoulders is universally flattering and perfect for showcasing 3B curls’ natural springiness.
Isabel Brito suggests a dry cut to shape your curls in their natural state. She says, “Rounded layers enhance the natural volume and give 3B curls a beautiful, balanced shape.”
“If you want more volume with 3B curls a shaggy wolf cut with curly bangs and shorter layers on top can support a fuller look,” suggests Sarah D’Angelo.
If you’re not a fan of volume, there’s an option for you too. According to D’Angelo, longer layers and face framing can help weigh down and elongate 3B curls.
Great curls start with the right products and styling habits.
Clarify Regularly. Brito advises, “Use a clarifying shampoo because the tighter texture holds onto product buildup.”
Layer Products. Start with a leave-in conditioner, then apply a medium-hold gel or styling cream. Brito’s go-to combo is AG Care Liquid Effects Gel topped with their Cloud Air Light Volumizing Mousse.
Sectioning Is Key. Working in 4–5 sections while your hair is wet ensures even product application.
Towel Off Excess. After styling, use a microfiber towel to remove extra product and water, speeding up drying time without frizz.
For added volume, scrunch in products and diffuse. To elongate curls, rake products through wet hair and air dry.
Men with 3B curls often prefer simple routines, and D’Angelo has a winning strategy: “Rake a styling cream through wet hair after washing and conditioning, do the ‘dog shake,’ and call it a day!” Styling creams are ideal for a softer hold without stiffness or crunch, making maintenance effortless.
