If you’re rocking type 2C hair, you know from experience that managing those lush waves can be tricky but rewarding. In this guide, we’ll help you understand what makes 2C hair special, how it differs from other hair types, and which haircuts and products bring out the best in those gorgeous locks.
Type 2C hair is known for its rich, defined waves that start at the root and border on curls. Esther Laveck, hairstylist and salon owner from Dayton, Ohio, explains, “2C hair types are the tightest waves and usually have an S formation or very loose curl.”
This texture can sometimes be mistaken for curly hair due to its wave intensity, but it doesn’t coil in the same way. Type 3A curls are loose spirals that form soft tendrils, while 2C is shaped more like a wave. The waves are fuller than 2A and 2B types, making 2C the waviest (and frizziest!) of the three.
“The best haircuts for this type of textured hair are ones that will enhance the natural wave,” believes Seattle hairstylist Denise Welsh. Here are four haircuts to try for different lengths:
For a chic, shorter look, Esther suggests a “flowy short cut” that enhances the full wave. A long wavy pixie or a layered bob can easily achieve this. Such cuts allow for plenty of movement and keep your natural wave pattern intact.
Rounded layers are fantastic for medium hair, especially for face-framing or accentuating your wave pattern. Esther advises that “medium-length cuts work great with rounded layers.” With this cut, you’ll gain movement and volume without overwhelming the natural wave.
Long hair with short layers at the crown helps keep the waves from weighing down and stretching out. This option is ideal if you want to maintain length but still keep your wave definition. According to Esther, “Shorter layers for long hair make sure the top layer doesn’t fall flat and straight,” maintaining volume at the roots.
If your waves can handle it, ask your stylist to use a razor technique. “I personally love to cut waves with a razor if their integrity can handle it,” says Esther. A razor cut can take the weight off in a way that allows for natural bounce, though a sliding motion with shears also works.
The right products are essential to managing type 2C waves, especially since they’re prone to frizz and need hydration. “For type 2C hair I recommend using a sulfate-free shampoo and a hydrating conditioner to prevent dryness which will help with the frizz and help the waves/curls lay softer,” says Denise. She swears by Surface Curls Shampoo & Conditioner, praising them for being “all-natural, vegan and PETA approved.”
Try leaving your hair wetter when applying products – it helps the waves form and clump together better. Styling in the shower or using a spray bottle to keep hair damp while applying products can help control frizz and enhance clumps. “Hydration with mist is a must-have to reactivate the curl on next-day styles,” shares Esther. This keeps waves fresh without needing a full wash and restyle.
For those with finer textures, using lightweight products will keep your waves from getting weighed down. Try soft or volumizing mousses depending on how much volume you like in your haircut. “For styling my go-to is Redken Acidic Bonding Curl Cream,” shares Denise. “It helps define the wave as well as control the frizz.”
