Wave care tips that actually work.
Some days your waves hold their shape like a dream; other days, they fall flat or frizz out by noon. That’s the everyday story for many with type 2B hair. This guide helps you work with your natural texture, choose smart cuts, and build styling routines that support the fullness and bounce of your waves.
This hair type is right in the middle of the wavy spectrum. The waves start around the mid-lengths and form loose S-shapes. “It’s noticeably more defined than type 2A, which tends to be flatter and finer, and it lacks the tighter, more voluminous waves of type 2C,” explains Maureen Denise McDonald, licensed cosmetologist with experience in multicultural hair care.
Compared to 2A, 2B hair is coarser and more prone to frizz. It doesn’t fall as flat and usually doesn’t respond well to heavy styling products. On the other hand, 2C hair has even tighter waves (almost borderline curls!) and often needs more moisture than 2B hair does. “Type 2B hair has more waves and tends to be less beachy looking with less body in the crown overall,” says Peter Felix, NOVA ARTS SALON‘s curly hair specialist.
Humidity can puff up 2B waves, and brushing dry strands can break the wave pattern entirely. “If your hair dries into soft waves without curling or straightening completely – and it tends to get frizzy with humidity – you’re likely a 2B,” Maureen sums it up.
The haircut makes a huge difference in how your waves behave. Here are four styles that help your texture thrive.
“For shorter cuts, a lob or shoulder-length shape with face-framing layers adds body and texture without overwhelming the wave,” Maureen recommends.

This cut’s layered structure works well with 2B hair, giving it movement and a bit of lift. Soft face-framing layers bring structure without flattening your natural wave.

If you like to keep your hair long, ask for long, internal layers. “They help enhance the natural wave without weighing it down,” says Maureen.

Since 2B waves already have a defined S-shape, you can define them with lightweight products like sea salt spray or mousse for extra texture. Try finger curling or scrunching to prompt the waves.

Naturally wavy hair does best with a less-is-more mindset. Avoid heavy butters and oils that can flatten your waves. “Products that work well for this hair type include creams or gels that focus on adding body to the hair, especially in the crown area,” says Peter.
After washing, flip your hair forward and scrunch in a wave-defining gel or foam upside down from midshaft to ends. Air-dry or use a diffuser to keep your pattern intact. Refresh on non-wash days with a curl-refreshing spray designed for wavy textures.
Sleep on silk or satin pillowcases with your hair in a loose braid or a pineapple bun to maintain definition overnight. And use a microfiber towel or cotton T-shirt to dry your hair – regular towels can rough up the cuticle and cause frizz.
