Kim Kardashian’s latest hairstyle, the basket braid, might just spark a new trend in the fashion and beauty world. Debuting on Instagram, her platinum silver hair showcased intricate basket-weave braids, drawing attention from fans and fashion enthusiasts alike.
This look, crafted by her long-time hairstylist Chris Appleton, echoes the artistry seen in Bottega Veneta’’s iconic woven leather purses, shining proof of the timeless appeal of perfectly crafted styles.
Additionally, we couldn’t help but notice that Kardashian’s look seems to nod to the basket braids from Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection. With such influential inspirations, it’s no wonder Kim’s basket braids are stirring the public’s imagination and setting a new standard for avant-garde hairstyling.
Although Kim’s platinum blonde hair and her choice to go for two piggy-style braids arouse unwanted associations with Founding Fathers in too many, basket braids can be both artistic and elegant. Here’s how to try this trend on.
This style may look intricately woven, but it’s surprisingly easy to achieve with a topsy tail tool. Start by creating three traditional three-strand braids at the crown of your head, letting them cascade down the rest of your hair.
Use the topsy tail tool to pull a thin strand of hair through the top row of braid loops, letting the end hang freely. This strand will later become part of the larger braid.
Repeat this process on the other side, threading the new strand under the first one. Continue alternating sides, weaving the strands to create a sleek, wide braid that showcases a meticulous pattern.
This technique doesn’t require tools and creates a beautiful, elaborate weave. Divide your hair into two equal sections at the top of your head. Take a strand of hair near your right temple and cross it over the right section and under the left section horizontally.
Do the same with a strand on the left, crossing it under the newly added strand, over the left section, and under the right section. You’ll have four strands forming the basis of your “basket.” Keep adding small pieces of loose hair from either side, pulling the sections firmly to keep the braid tight.
Make sure the braid follows a straight path down the back of your head. For better grip, you can slightly dampen your hair. Once all the loose hair is incorporated, continue braiding and secure the end with a hair tie. Adjust the braid to make it even and tidy.
This romantic style frames your mane with an ornate pattern rather than encasing all your hair. Divide your hair into ten sections and tie off eight of them with thin rubber bands.
Twist the remaining two furthest right sections at ear or jaw level, depending on where you want the weave to start. Wrap the ends of the twisted strands around the first of the eight sections. Twist the primary sections again a little lower and wrap the ends around the next section.
Continue twisting and wrapping the strands until you reach the last section, slightly lowering the twist each time, and secure the ends with a hair clip. Take the new two furthest right sections, twist them beneath the first row of twists, and wrap the ends around the next section.
Keep twisting and wrapping until you reach the last strand. Add as many rows of twists as you like, removing the rubber bands as you go. Align your basket braid periodically to ensure a neat weave.
With Kim Kardashian setting the trend, basket braids are poised to become the next big thing in hairstyling. Try these techniques to add a touch of elegance and artistry to your hair, making a bold fashion statement.
