Raise your hand if you like experimenting with your hair. Yeah, we’ve all been there, trying to find out how to style our hair type. Every hair journey is unique, so what works for you might not play out for others, especially when it comes to naturally curly locks.
The content creator and curly-haired girlie, @honeybthatsme, loves being different. One day, she embraces her springy coils, sporting an admirable au naturel look. The next day, she’s up for something new, either by straightening or defining her curls. In one of her videos, the blogger shows how she transforms her coily locks into defined curls with a curling iron. Some fans appreciate the move and compliment the style on her Facebook page. Others, criticize the influencer for heat damage, urging her to use heatless methods instead.
Which side are you on?
Having a curly mane doesn’t mean that you wake up every morning with perfectly defined ringlets. Sometimes, frizzy and brittle hair happens even to the best of us. The content creator knows the feeling all too well and often uses heat-styling tools to make her tresses look more tamed and defined.
For this style, she blows dry her hair first and then takes a spiral curling wand to shape and define her hair. By using the heat on her kinky hair, the beauty blogger makes her curls pop. The process takes time, but the result is worth the effort!
Many hair fans, however, do not approve of the method, claiming that the heat-styling tool only damages natural hair. “She could just take care of her hair properly and wear her natural curls instead of that dry frizz she rocks all the time,” one comment says. “As hard as it may seem we have to try our best to stay away from the heat, honey,” a social media user adds.
Some followers even suggest getting heat-free curls to avoid heat damage. Bantu knots are among the most popular protective styles for natural curls. They are friendly to every hair texture and can last for days. “I do bantu knots in my hair and it lasts for over a week,” a follower mentions.
At the same time, the majority of hair fans insist that the final result greatly depends on the hair type. “It’s crazy to think what works for your hair will also work for the next person. Bantu Knotts, twist out, and flat twist don’t work on less coily hair, such as mine (they straighten my hair),” one woman admits. “All the Black women acting like they never put any kind of heat in their hair is wild. We all know textured hair is versatile and she wanted a specific style. If you take care of your hair, occasional heat is not a problem,” another user agrees.
