The coffee-inspired brunette shade made for September.
September has a funny way of making summer hair look suddenly very August. Sun-lightened brunette, grown-out highlights, slightly faded color: all perfectly good until the first sweater weather arrives. Mocha brunette is the coffeehouse shade that smooths out all the summer brass and gives your color an early‑fall reset.

Imagine a cup of coffee with plenty of cream, then add the depth of melted chocolate. That’s basically mocha brunette in hair form. It is a rich brown with chocolate and coffee tones, plus enough tonal variation to stop the color from looking like one solid block.
The shade can be warmer or cooler depending on the starting color and the formula, which makes it surprisingly adaptable. Add plenty of shine, and the brown tones start catching the light differently as the hair moves. It has the cozy appeal of a darker shade without automatically taking you into near-black territory. Basically, your hair gets to look like an expensive coffee blend.

If your brunette has spent the summer collecting golden highlights, mocha can bring some of that richness back. You do not have to erase every lighter strand to get there.
Starting with a medium brunette? A richer mocha glaze may be enough. Have grown-out highlights? Keep a few subtle ribbons through the lengths for variation. Starting with lighter hair? Ask for a softer mocha that preserves some brightness instead of jumping straight into a deep brunette.
Taylor Murphy, hairstylist and beauty expert at Made and Taylored, expects this richer direction to gain ground in fall. She says the “subtle dimension paired with a glossy, healthy finish” creates the warmer, luxurious feel people tend to want as temperatures drop.

The formula takes you straight into mocha brunette, and the shine plus tonal variation keep the color lively once you’re back in real life.
Strategically placed lighter pieces can also prevent deeper mocha from becoming visually flat. Fine hair can wear the color beautifully, although porous strands may lose their tone faster. Murphy notes that these clients may need glossing every four to six weeks to keep the color bright and prevent unwanted orange tones. At home, color-safe products and cooler water can help prolong the result.

Deep mocha: Choose this if you want a noticeably richer brunette with serious coffeehouse depth.
Soft mocha: A lighter hue for anyone who wants the mocha family without making the overall color dramatically darker.
Mocha with caramel or beige ribbons: Keep some brightness through the lengths if your summer highlights are still worth saving.
Cool mocha: Ask for smokier brown tones if warm coppery tones are not your thing.

Mocha brunette may not have been invented for fall 2026, but it fits the season almost suspiciously well. The shade turned out exactly as experts said it would – a glossy, dimensional brunette with richness and movement.
