When it comes to our hair, we love to experiment with various dye jobs and styling tricks. With so many different coloring techniques and red carpet looks, we can try a different one almost every week. That means a lot of styling tools, twisting, pinning and hair dye. Unfortunately, too much experimenting can also mean a lot of damage. Even the prettiest hairstyle will not look good if your mane is dull with straggly ends. Keeping our hair in tip-top condition is just as important as trying out the latest trendy looks. Using a hair mask is a brilliant way to keep our locks hydrated and healthy. Read on to find out some magic recipes!
Of course, there are lots of products you can buy, but a DIY hair mask can also do wonders for lackluster, parched locks. The best part is a lot of the hair mask recipes require ingredients that you already have in your kitchen cupboard. And we’re not talking about making anything complicated. The best hair masks require only a couple of ingredients and next to no culinary skills. Take a look at the homemade hair masks that will turn dry, brittle locks into shiny ones worthy of a shampoo commercial.
#1: Coconut Oil for Hydration
Scoop out one half to 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, depending on the length of your hair. Warm up the coconut oil in your hands so it turns into a liquid. Then apply the coconut oil hair mask to your hair, focusing on the ends. Twist your hair into a bun then cover it with a shower cap. Leave the mask on for 15-30 minutes then rinse out. This simple moisturizing mask will nourish dry ends. For an intense treatment, use it as an overnight hair mask and wash it off in the morning.
#2: Avocado & Egg Yolk to Revive Lifeless Hair
Mix half an avocado with one egg yolk in a blender. Apply the mask to your entire head and cover with a shower cap or towel. Leave it on for approximately 20 minutes, then rinse off. The avocado hair mask will help strengthen and moisturize your mane thanks to the high vitamin content in avocados. Plus, the DIY mask is great for hair growth.
#3: Egg, Honey & Olive Oil for Stronger Hair
Combine one egg with 2 tablespoons of honey and 2 tablespoons of olive oil to create your homemade hair mask. Apply the mixture to your locks. Cover with a shower cap, or plastic wrap and a towel. Leave it on for around 30 minutes then rinse off. This protein-rich egg hair mask will boost strength as well as volume. For damaged hair, you can try leaving the mask on for an hour or two for a more intense treatment.
#4: Macadamia Oil, Aloe Vera & Tea Tree Oil for Repair
Pour a quarter of a cup of macadamia oil into a bowl. Then add in 1-2 drops each of tea tree oil and aloe vera gel. Mix the ingredients together, then distribute the mask through your hair using your fingers or a comb. Apply plastic wrap or a shower cap to enhance the effectiveness of the macadamia hair mask, if desired. Allow the repairing hair mask to sit for at least 15 minutes before rinsing off. The mask is brilliant for dry hair that is in need of moisture.
#5: Olive Oil for Split Ends
For an easy olive oil hair mask, you can simply apply 1-2 tablespoons of oil to the lengths of your hair. If you have a dry scalp, you can also try massaging an extra drop of olive oil directly onto it. Wrap your hair with a damp towel and let the olive oil soak in for an hour before rinsing it out. The treatment is especially good for those with thicker or natural hair because it will condition your dry mane and help minimize the appearance of split ends. Bonus: the olive oil can also help you to get rid of dandruff flakes and reduce the damage of natural homemade lighteners.
#6: Mayonnaise, Egg & Olive Oil for Deep Conditioning
In a bowl, combine 5 tablespoons of mayonnaise with 2 eggs and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Apply the mixture to damp hair and cover with plastic wrap. After 20 minutes, rinse it out. This luxurious mayonnaise hair mask will help condition your locks. Plus, it will tame frizz and flyaways. This makes it a great choice if you have curly hair.
#7: Banana, Avocado & Jojoba Oil for Dry Hair
Mash up 1 banana with 1 avocado. When thoroughly combined, mix in 2 tablespoons of jojoba oil, or another oil of your choice. (Melted coconut oil would also work well.) Apply the mask to your hair. You can use a comb or your fingers to distribute it. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes. Rinse off, then shampoo and condition as usual. This banana hair mask will help boost moisture and manage frizz.
#8: Honey & Olive Oil for Moisture
Create a simple honey hair mask by combining half a cup of honey with 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil. This will make it easier to apply. Once combined, distribute the mixture over your hair. Leave it on for 20-25 minutes, then rinse off. Honey is rich in humectants which will help seal in the moisture into every strand.
Using a hair mask regularly might seem like a hassle because it is adding another step to your already full beauty routine, but the results are worth it. Every single haircut and color looks better on well-conditioned locks. And when you already have the ingredients in your cupboard for your hair masks, you do not have to waste time going out to the store to buy them. Simply mix them together, apply the DIY mask to your mane, and you will have shiny, hydrated locks in no time. It’s a little extra effort but it produces visible results that make all of the difference.
