For all you budding DIY hairdressers and stylists, we’ve got twelve tremendous tools that can be successfully used at home. Find out why you need them in your life and how best to apply them.
#1: Professional Hair Scissors
Step away from the kitchen scissors! If you intend to cut your hair at home, you need professional tools to get a professional-looking result.
Although there is a range of complex variations of hair shears online, all you really need is a lightweight pair of razor-edged hair scissors with a finger rest. You’ll also need a pair of thinning scissors which are essential to soften the hard edges of your haircut.
Both tools are simple enough to use. Comb a lock of hair into a smooth, flat section and wedge it between two fingers. Then, use the underside of your fingers as a guide and snip a straight line underneath them.
#2: Indestructible Carbon Combs
Don’t be deceived by their looks, these simple combs are just as important as a professional pair of scissors.
Fine-tooth carbon combs are the masters of precision, so using one while cutting your hair can be the difference between a drop-dead gorgeous cut and a deadly disaster.
They’re just as useful for styling sleek looks too, being both heat and chemical resistant – they’re practically indestructible! You can use them for almost any style, whether you’re cutting, dying, straightening or curling your hair. And, on top of all that, the sharp tail comb is a lifesaver when it comes to partings and hair braiding.
#3: Handy Crocodile Clips
You’ve probably seen your own hairdresser using these handy clips, and you should too!
Crocodile clips are perfect for keeping hair out of the way while you work on other sections, whether you’re cutting or styling at home. Use the clips to pin up the top of your hair while you style the bottom layer, or use them to hold back sections of hair while you trim other bits.
#4: Unbelievable Round Ionic Brushes
These brushes are almost too good to be true. Not only can you style beautiful bouncing curls with the round shape of the barrel, you can also eliminate frizzy hair.
If you often find yourself with static or flyaway hair, your locks are likely lacking negative ions. Ionic hair brushes restore the balance of positive and negative ions in your hair, giving you luscious, frizz-free locks.
#5: An Easy-To-Use Razor Comb
These nifty little tools are easy to use if you’re not entirely confident when cutting your hair with scissors.
Instead of changing the overall length of your hair, razor combs will just slice off a little bit of weight. They’re a great way to get rid of a few split ends, or drop a bit of thickness from your hair. The comb is especially handy if you have a pixie cut that’s starting to grow out of control.
To use this tool, all you need to do is make swift motions in the direction of hair growth. The comb will cut at the first point it touches your hair, so it’s best to start near the tips of your hair and then work upwards as needed.
#6: Overnight Curling Rods
Hair rollers may sound like a blast from the past (and they are) but they’re actually as useful now as they were back in the day.
There’s a range of different types of rollers on the market, from the old-fashioned foam rollers to the more modern cork screw curlers, but our favorites have to be the flexible curling rods.
Start by washing your hair and lightly towel drying it. Comb out any knots, then simply wrap a lock of hair around your first curling rod. Bend the rod over the loose tip of your hair to keep it in place, then continue to fold the rod up until it’s next to your scalp. Do the same with the rest of your hair, then leave it overnight.
In the morning, all you have to do is take out the curling rods and voila – curly hair!
#7: The Perfect Sized Straightener
Straighteners are essential for hair styling at home, whether you have straight or curly hair. These tools from heaven can create the perfect fringe flick, poker straight manes and even beach waves.
The perfect straightener for you depends on what type and length of hair you have. Ladies with short hair will need a mini flat iron, possibly as thin as half an inch wide. Whereas, those with long hair will need a much wider heating tool, such as a two-inch wide flat iron. And, if you’re constantly changing your hairstyles, a one-inch wide straightener is your best bet.
#8: An Amazing Curling Wand Set
For every girl who thinks picture-perfect curls can only be done at the salon, look no further.
A curling wand is easy to use and creates beach-babe curls in a matter of minutes. All you have to do is wrap a lock of hair around the barrel for a few seconds and release it! The shape of the curling wand will do the rest of the work for you, so a set of a few different wands is great for those who like to experiment with different styles.
#9: Hair Dye Brushes
For those who like to regularly color their hair, a hair dying kit is one of the best possible beauty investments.
Rather than forking out a hefty amount of money for a trip to the salon every few weeks, try dying your hair at home for a fraction of the price.
The directions of use will differ slightly, depending on what hair dye product you are using. However, you can be sure that whatever product you use, investing in a few good quality dying brushes will ensure that your hair dye is perfectly mixed and that not a single hair is missed.
#10: Colorful Hair Chalk
Dying your hair at home doesn’t have to be as scary as it sounds.
If you don’t want to try a permanent color, there are plenty of semi-permanent dyes that will wash out in a matter of days or weeks. And, if you want even less commitment, try hair chalk! Add a few highlights by literally coloring your hair with the chalk, or buy an applicator to easily comb in the color.
Keep in mind that hair chalk tends to work best on blonde hair, and gives just a light glow of color. So, if you have dark hair or want a vibrant new look, it may be worth taking the permanent hair dye plunge.
#11: This Unusual Hair Spirit Level
This unusual gadget looks more like it should be used for putting up shelves than styling your hair, but bear with us…
The hair spirit level is incredibly useful for a number of DIY hairstyles. It can be used to trim super straight hairstyles or to dip dye your locks. All you need to do is place a hair piece that you’d like to cut or dye in this contraption, making sure that the strands are smooth and evenly distributed. Then, pull the hair spirit level down to your desired length, and chop or dye the tips!
A top tip for dip dying is to massage the dye up your locks with a little bit of conditioner. This will ensure that you don’t have an awkward straight line between your natural hair color and the dyed color.
#12: Clippers with Lots of Attachments
Shaving your own hair may sound terrifying, but with the right attachments, it’s as easy as pie.
Invest in a clipper with a plenty of different sized comb attachments and you’ll be able to cut a pixie cut to any length that you want. If you intend to make trimming of your own hair a habit, make sure you get a kit that includes tools to clean your clippers too.
Lots of these tools will take a little bit of practice to get the hang of, so don’t be discouraged if your home-grown hairstyle doesn’t come out perfect the first time. Always start on a small piece of hidden hair, whether you’re trying out new scissors or a hair dye, so that any beginners’ mistakes aren’t too noticeable. And, as with any DIY hairstyle, enjoy it – trying out new techniques is half the fun!
