DIY: Avocado Hair Masks

In terms of the scientific method, I took 5 most popular DIY Avocado masks, we all read and heard fairy tales about, and tested each of them. So now, welcome to the deep-nourishing avocado hair masks guide!

How It All Began

Decision of doing a review article of DIY avocado hair masks came from above, when I, for the umpteenth time, was trying to deep nourish my dull and dry hair at home and struggled with finding something good and easy to-do. Of course, my too-lazy-to-go-to-the shop-ass wasn’t going to leave the house just to buy some fancy hair oils and ridiculous ingredients of top trending hair masks. So, trying to stick to products that I already had in the fridge – one innocuous avocado, honey and olive oil, I decided to try an avocado treatment mask. And this is where it all began.

#1: Avocado and Honey Hair Mask

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1–2 tbsp of honey
  • 3–5 tbsp of olive oil

Blend it very smoothly and apply for 30 – 60 min. Rinse with lukewarm water.

“Bravo,” – I said, and went to the kitchen, to start blending that magical potion.

My expectations about the home spa thing were kind of reduced to zero when I started to apply that gross mixture of what looked like mushed Little Spud from Ghostbusters. Though the process was gross-like and I had to wash my hair after for 3 or 4 times, it resulted in soft and silky hair.

#2: Avocado and Banana Hair Mask

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • a few drops of your favorite essential oil, such as lavender, rose, sweet orange or jasmine (Darn, I gotta skip that part)

Mix it all together and kind of squish it all over your head, leaving for 15 mins or more.

Doing this mask, make sure to blend banana and avocado until they turn into a uniform paste, without any lumps, otherwise, good luck trying to comb out tiny banana pieces out of your hair.

#3: Avocado and Egg Yolk Hair Mask

  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • 1 egg yolk

Apply the mask with your fingers starting from your scalp all the way down to the ends of your hair.

P.S. This was the grossest poop-like mask I ever applied onto my hair.

That mask technically should promote hair growth, but homie hasn’t noticed any changes here.

#4: Avocado And Olive Oil Hair Treatment

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1/4 cup of steel-cut or rolled oats
  • 1/8 to 1/4 cup of olive oil
  • 1 cup of milk

Mush avocado into a lump-free paste, mix all ingredients together and stir thoroughly until they turn into a smooth paste. Apply onto your hair from roots to ends. Leave for 15 mins or more. Rinse with lukewarm water to get rid of any traces of the mask.

#5: Avocado for Dry Hair

  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • 1 tablespoon of raw honey
  • 1 large whole egg
  • essential oil of your choice

Mix it all together and apply to hair, covering with a plastic shower cap or plastic wrap. Leave on for 15-20 minutes.

Don’t ever use hot water rinsing masks like that or you will cook the egg in your hair.

Conclusion

We all know that avocados are healthy for our bodies and how important to include them in our diets. But what about hair care? Is it healthy as well or is it only good for added shine? After short internet surfing I found out what Avocado actually does to our hair:

  1. There are so many things that deplete moisture from our hair – heat styling, wind, sun, cold, air pollution. So, many people struggle with weak, dry and damaged hair. Avocado is very rich in vitamins A, D, E and B6 and also high in proteins, amino acids, magnesium, folic acid, copper and iron. And the most important thing is avocado oil is one of the few that can actually penetrate the cuticle and moisturize hair.
  2. Sometimes we become our own worst enemies, with harsh or frequent chemical hair treatments — such as relaxing, bleaching or perming hair. With our own hands we slower hair growth and damage it. That’s where avocado would be our best friend — Avocado revitalizes your scalp, it is a wonderful frizzy hair and dandruff treatment. Avocado oil works as a natural sunscreen and treats dehydrated skin.
